Never heard of Atlantic 252? You’re probably not alone…
‘The Longwave Giant’ aka Longwave Radio Atlantic 252 was an Irish radio station that
broadcast from the town of Trim, County Meath, Ireland from September 1989 until January 2002.
For a large part of the 1990s it was the go to station across the UK and Ireland for anyone who wanted to hear the biggest
chart hits of the day non-stop, even to the point of driving people mad by playing the same songs every hour and a half!
The presenters had ‘unique’ names…Dusty Rhodes, Robin Banks, Rick O’Shea, Pizzaman,
Hollywood Haze, Beverley Hills, Jo King…just some of the team who broadcast from the big pink house over the years.
The station had a massive impact on UK commercial radio with its ‘more music less talk’ format,
and the style was adopted by stations across England, Scotland and Wales.
This sadly led to the demise of the station as listening figures declined in the late 1990s,
and despite several re-launches the station closed in January 2002.
If you were a teenager growing up in the UK or Ireland in the 1990s it’s highly likely you listened to the station,
simply to enjoy the music, or to try and win some of the prizes the station gave away over the years, including cars, holidays, and cash.
Always remember the phrase that pays…
’I listen to Longwave Radio Atlantic 252 now give me my money…cha ching!”
